Nine-year-old dies after contracting brain-eating amoeba after swimming in Kinneret

• 01A 9-year-old boy died on Thursday after contracting encephalitis as a result of Naegleria Fowleri, also known as the 'brain-eating amoeba,' the Health Ministry announced.
• 02The ministry first announced that the boy had been hospitalized with swelling in his brain and was subsequently sedated and ventilated in intensive care at Rambam Medical Center on September 6.
• 03There have been fewer than 500 cases worldwide, two of which were diagnosed in the US last year, and three of which were diagnosed in Israel in recent years.
• 04According to the ministry, an investigation found that the boy had been swimming at Kursi Beach in the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) about a week before his hospitalization.
• 05Due to the amoeba's presence in warm water, swimming sports events have been postponed until the water temperature drops below 24 degrees, at which point the proliferation of the amoeba decreases significantly.
• 06A sample was sent to the Health Ministry laboratory, which confirmed the cause as the amoeba the night before.
